One of the functions of forest land is as a source of germplasm and biodiversity. For this reason, PT Jorong Barutama Greston (JBG) carries out biodiversity monitoring activities with the aim of knowing the latest developments regarding the status of biodiversity in ex-mining land that has undergone reclamation and revegetation, including natural forests that are not disturbed by mining activities. Apart from that, to make plans for management efforts so that environmental sustainability is maintained.
From the results of monitoring carried out in 2021, it was found that several types of mammals were found in the JBG reclamation area, such as Sun Bears (Helarctos malayanus), Wild Boars (Sus barbatus), Long-tailed Macaques, Proboscis Monkeys, Forest Cats and Menjangan. Apart from that, several types of birds and amphibians were also found. One indicator of the success of reclamation activities in post-mining reclamation areas on open land used by coal mines carried out by PT JBG, South Kalimantan on an ongoing basis can be seen from the recovery of the post-mining ecosystem by increasing the carrying capacity of the reclamation area habitat to support animal life. wild in the surrounding area is the presence of groups of insects.
