As part of ITM's and its subsidiaries' commitment to biodiversity, the company conducts biodiversity studies before conducting mining operations to obtain baseline data for future biodiversity management activities. One of these studies is conducted by PT Nusa Persada Resources, which has prepared a biodiversity management roadmap for pre-mining operations since 2019.
In collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), PT NPR has prepared for the study since 2020. The study was conducted for approximately three weeks in 2021. The study found that the forest in the PT NPR concession area is still considered important by the local community as a source of germplasm. Several plant species in the forest are still utilized by the community as food sources, timber producers, and medicinal plants. This will be a consideration for PT NPR in developing future reclamation and mine closure plans. In addition, the biodiversity value is also high, which will be a consideration for the company in determining the plant species to be planted in revegetation activities.
